My name is
Amanda Welter. I studied Instrumental and General Music Education at Ball State
University in Muncie, Indiana under the tutelage of many wonderful teachers and
mentors. Through my education in public school and university studies, as well
as events and people in my life, I have been shaped into the educator I am
today. Chief among my influences have been my music teachers; those that taught
me about music and those that taught me how to teach music. When trying to pinpoint why I chose education, I am unable to complete the task. I cannot find a time in my life that I consciously chose education. I can, however, cite many times with which the choice of education has been confirmed for me. My great affinity for people and desire to pass forward the wonderful experience of having a mentor and guide have always returned me to the field of education.
When trying to pinpoint why I chose music, I am able to definitively say that I have been committed to music as my medium for education from the beginning. I am drawn to music for both its academic and aesthetic attributes. I am fascinated by the language, history, culture and intricacies of music. I am even more fascinated by the impact that experiences in music have on people. Music has an intangible quality that makes it one of the most inspiring experiences, if you are taught to understand and appreciate it. For both the academic and aesthetic, I chose music as my medium.
My training for a career in music education has been simultaneously sufficient and indefinitely insufficient. I feel prepared with the resources, tools and knowledge to successfully teach students through music. At the same time, I recognize the sheer vastness of what there is to know about pedagogy and music, and understand that I will constantly be learning and growing as a music educator.
When I see myself in the future, I hold a job as a music educator, inspirer, motivator, mentor and music maker. I hope to do so through a position as an instrumental music educator. Someday, I intend to pursue higher education, with the intent of being a teacher of teachers in music. If I can simultaneously provide my students with the best education through music within my abilities and learn from every experience so that I can eventually teach teachers how to be better than I ever was, my career goals will be satisfied.
